- Universities
1. Sixth form
colleges:
You should contact directly with the colleges
that offer A-level courses and send applications to them. It is advisable to
apply as early as April to June, to allow you plenty of time to prepare for
visa.
For a ranking list of UK’s top 50
preparatory colleges in 2000 surveyed by the
Guardian, click here.
There is also a list of UK’s top 100
comprehensives and top
100 selective schools done by this same newspaper.
2. Universities
Two factors among others are worth considering
when applying to a university:
2.1 Academic Quality
You should check what universities are the
best in the field you want to study. For instance, LSE
may be among the elites in economics, London
Business School is leading in business management whereas King’s
College is leading in scientific research. Oxford
University and Cambridge University are
undoubtedly among the best and thus worth a go. There is a collection of
assessment reports on various universities by the UK
governmental Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education, which I
particularly discourage you to try if you are allergic to tedious stuff (I
myself have never spent more than 2 minutes reading these web-pages!). Instead,
you should take a look at the The
League Table in 2000 by the Financial Times via its own survey, which is
available in PDF format here. There is also a separate ranking
of business schools in America and Europe in 2001 by the Financial Times,
which will be of great use for those contemplating an MBA for the career.
As for the tuition, it varies within an
insignificant range as far as I can realise, though elite universities may
charge about 2-3 thousands pounds more than the rest. However, you should
particularly pay attention to the living costs, which vary greatly from one
region to another. It may be quite true that the costs of living tend to
decrease further North of England. (However, if you intend to work part-time,
those in the South may very well offer more opportunities! See
Working Opportunities)
